Departing Hanoi in the early morning, you'll travel roughly two hours south to Ninh Binh, one of Vietnam's most photogenic provinces. The first stop is Hoa Lu, where ancient stone temples dedicated to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh stand amid forested hills. Walking through these well-preserved grounds gives you a genuine sense of Vietnam's dynastic past before the country's capital moved to Hanoi in the 11th century.
From Hoa Lu, you head to the river embarkation point for the signature experience of the day. A local oarsman rows you along the Ngo Dong River in a flat-bottomed sampan, weaving between towering karst mountains and beneath three cave arches.
